You know, I have to agree with Theo (De Raadt) on this one.

ifconfig dc3 | grep netmask | awk '{ print $2 }'
ifconfig dc3 | grep netmask | awk '{ print $4 }'
ifconfig dc3 | grep netmask | awk '{ print $6 }'

These seem to work just fine, and you're not chunking up the code for 
something that's useless, which means there's less to deal with and 
maintain in the future.
