OpenBSD 3.1 and Poptop 1.01 (pptpd)

To All,

For some time I've been happily running a Poptop VPN
server on an OpenBSD 3.0 box, recently I had a
requirement for a feature that was only added in
OpenBSD versions 3.1 and later so I upgraded to
3.1-stable to get this feature (among other things).

As a result of the upgrade my pptp server is no longer
functioning. I've tried custom kernels with GRE
disabled (which allowed me to connect but nothing
seemed to be going through the GRE tunnel). Using a
GENERIC kernel with kernel GRE enabled wouldn't even
allow me to connect to the PPTP server at all.

Is there some trick to getting Poptop 1.01 running on
OpenBSD 3.1 that didn't apply to 3.0 that I'm missing?
Or has something changed with the 3.1 release which
no longer makes this possible?
