I didn't understand anything you said in your first post, but if 
that is your problem:

i.e. you want to have tons of interface pairs to bridge between, you 
might want to use 802.1q encapsulation on the real interfaces and use
the VLAN interfaces to bridge between. I haven't tried that yet (the 
bridging part, VLANs worked just fine last time I used it), but it
may be worth a shot.
