zcat problem?

Is there a reason why zcat returns an error when passed a set of arguments 
including a non-gz'd file? For example:

   zcat -fc /var/log/maillog.0* /var/log/maillog | grep reject= | . . .

(from the FreeBSD 'Mail Reject Scanner'), does not work due to this issue.
