Itojun: I suffered a similar fate with a 4 Gig IBM ata laptop disk on my
PII, Similar errors while OpenBSD was booting, and then Bang, it died.
I wiped the disk and ran a multi-pass formatter, and installed TurboLinux on
it, only to have it fry within two months. Similar errors during boot.
The disk itself was known to have problems in the 380Z Laptops. While
working it would sit there and go "CLUNK" and IBM tech support said that it
was Firmware on the disk.
I bought a 40GB disk and have no problems now.
