Btw., I seem to remember that the FreeBSD twe driver 
(which is referenced in the OpenBSD twe manpage) also 
is able to trigger a rebuild, at least on the 6000 
series cards. 

Yep, found the following in old logfiles (last year):

Jul  9 16:53:54 /kernel: twe0: AEN: <twed0: rebuild started>
Jul  9 17:45:25 /kernel: twe0: AEN: <twed0: rebuild done>

That was a FreeBSD 4.3 system.
