ncr driver crash during 2.2 install

Hello all,

while trying to install 2.2, I see the following:

At end(?) of base install, I get lots of error messages from tar
saying that it "cannot set permissions on /etc/..., <No such file or

  directory>".

After the complaint from tar about the inability to set permissions
on /etc/disklabels, I get the following error:

sd1(ncr0:1:0): trying to transfer 6d6f7000 bytes, mem addr =
0xf2e88000
  sd1(ncr0:1:0): command: 28 ( 0 da d2 95 2c 0 b7 b8 0 0 0)
  ncr?: scatter/gather failed (residue=1835884544).

The PC is an Asus TP4N, P166+, 48MB, Asus SC200, no IDE stuff, two
Quantum SCSI disks and an SCSI CD-ROM, installing on sd1.

The system runs FreeBSD 2.2.5, NT4SP3, Redhat 4, and SCO OpenServer
and
SCO Unixware without any problems.

I first installed using the SCSI CD-ROM, but installing over NFS
gives the exact same result, the numbers aren't random.

Anything I can do to work around this ?
