I was having a similar problem with xdm, it happened when I uncommented
xdm from /etc/rc.local
To get around this I used the xdm entry in /etc/ttys, but changed it from
ttyC0 to ttyC1 because loading it on any virtual terminal besides ttyC1
causes a completely new set of headaches. There are definite advantages to
using /etc/ttys, especially with pcvt's awesome switching abilities. Its
also cool that under this method xdm acts like just another getty. Anyway,
this fixed all my keyboard freeze-up problems.
Hope I Could Help
