IBM TP and ATA Card

Got your name of the net, hope thats all right.
I'm trying to use a crystal max 1080 4.3 gig(IDE) in a "kanguru"
portable pcmcia/ata interface case running win 95 on a IBM Thinkpad
365xd.
While the card is recognized and even the drive shows up as a generic
type 80 under drives
in Device manager, no drive letter is assigned. If I check off
removable, I can assign letters but the drive is unformatted and
attempts to format it fail with explorer crashing, anyideas?
I have tried all the info I found at IBM including putting the
didkdrv.sys and pawata.sys in the config.sys and then
trying to initialize from ezplay but the card is listed as IN not
Ready. Initilization is therefore not
possible. How can I tell if the diskdrv.sys loaded in Dos Mode. Any
ideas? What if I initialize
the hard drive on some other desktop machine and then try the pcmcia
install on my laptop?

Thanks for you help.
