Problem with Ethernet on Sparc/2.3

I have just installed 2.3 on a SPARCstation 10 and am having the following
crash occur whenever I attempt to ifconfig the Ethernet interface:

Any thoughts on what may be the problem here?  Although I've installed *BSD
systems on a variety of platforms, this is my first install on SPARC
hardware so I may have overlooked something simple.  Thanks in advance for
any pointers...
