Pppd: Lost Compress Sync

Hi,

Using and loving the 2.5 release, which I downloaded and installed around
two weeks ago.  I do have one problem, which is that during intensive
downloads over the PPP link to my ISP, it is not infrequent for the
connection to fail irrevocably.  The message logged to the console is 

"hostname pppd[$PID]; Lost compression sync: disabling compression

First, I'm wondering what this means; second, why does it happen; and
third, and most importantly, how can I fix the problem?

Here are the relevant stats:

OS: OpenBSD 2.5 Generic#243 i386
Machine: Gateway Pentium 166 MMX with 32 MB RAM
Modem: US Robotics Courier 56k
ISP: Concentric Network
Pppd: Version 2.3 patch level 5

Note: My PPP connection is vanilla in the sense that I am not
authenticating via PAP/CHAP.
