F'ing wdc1

Hey-

Any idea why my kernel(GENERIC v2.4) absolutely fails to see my secondary IDE controller?

It works if I boot off the cdrom- (master on secondary)- it found the primary (wdc0), the atapibus0, and wd0, then it found wdc1, atapibus1, and acd0- ALL GOOD.

But for some reason, if I boot off the disk (wd0a) it doesn't even detect my wdc1.
Therefore I can't get to the CDROM-
The kernel configs look identical, I'm assuming its the EXACT same kernel as well- since I haven't yet modified it after the install.

It's an NEC cdrom drive, and a WesternDigital HD.
I tried swapping wdc0 and wdc1 (pointing wdc0 to IO 170 and IRQ 15) but still only the primary (this time wdc1) was found.
Anyone seen this before?

PS- I have 2.5 but for this system it's not feasible to upgrade it at this time.
PPS- I looked in the archive but the search seems seriously broken?
