misc. bugs/errors from latest i386 snapshot (10.07.1999) clean install
(dmesg follows):

* ditto on the aforementioned ldconfig failure after extraction

* if first char of initial root password is shell meta-character '!',
install attempts to execute the user-defined password

* during boot:
	starting network daemons: sendmail inetdsshd: illegal option -- Q

* during boot, sshd options are displayed; is this desired?

* attempting to access a network interface which is detected but for
which no physical device exists causes a freeze (i.e., `ifconfig ep0
192.168.1.1` or `dhclient ep0`)

* after a successful ftp install and reboot, network access (3C509B)
fails; packets are sent (as per analysis on the wire) and are responded
to, but are never acknowledged (host continues requests - i.e., arp,
bootp, etc.); this works properly in 2.5-release, but is broken for at
least the last month's worth of snapshots (will test further today -
need to try other 3C509Bs and NICs in this machine, and this 3C509B in
other machines)
