I have problems with ex too.
I use non-pnp Intel EtherExpress PRO/10 (ISA).
It have BNC & TP connector, I setup card to use DNC connector with
DOS program (softset2), but when I boot OpenBSD it finds card and
print '... Connector TPE' regardless of connector type I set.
And, it works only on TP connector.
I looked through if_ex.c, and as I understand, connector type 
not used.. in driver.. 

Btw, there's no ex(4) man page :(
