Hm. disallowing root logins via telnet is quite normal. The obvious 
workaround is to log in as a normal user (on bsd, one in the wheel group),
the use 'su -'.

Either you are talking throwaway hardware, or you have way too much
cash on your hands. Hardware donations are accepted at a certain Calgary
