turns out my problem was, as far as i can tell, somewhere in the
tunneling stuff - i was using the 'ppp' frontend to pppd, which uses a
tunneling device to do dial on demand, etc.  i trashed the frontend and
wrote up an options file, and everything works fine.

that also explains:
Nov 13 11:47:19 sccap ppp[81]: tun0: Error: IpInput: wrote 1028, got
Message too long

in hindsight, this message makes perfect sense. oh well, in any case,
