niether startx nor /usr/X11R6/bin/startx works

I just installed wmaker. I ran /usr/local/bin/wmaker.inst in my
user account.

In root startx gets X going. But in my user account I get sh: startx: not found
and when I type the full path /usr/X11R6/bin/startx I get the error
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx[74]: xinit: not found. I have an .xinitrc file
in my home dir.  What am I forgeting here?
