Funny backspace behavior OpenBSD 2.7

I'm having an odd problem with the backspace key and apps like vim
and less. My backspace key in the shell seems to work fine, moves
one space to the left and deletes the previous character. In vim, or
less, the backspace key prints a (^? if that doesn't show up).

My terminal is set to xterm when I have an Eterm open, and is not
set in my .bashrc. I have also removed the stty erase ^h line
from my .bashrc.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!
