Hi again,
Well, my only chance was CVS - the files were small enough. Additionally,
the periodically occuring hangs were no problem with "kill and restart".
At last I was able to compile a slim and fast kernel now, the networking
problems have gone away now.
Without the obviously buggy generic kernel, 2.8 looks good so far.
