problem with Creative ViBRA16X PnP, CTL0043

I'm using the latest 2.8 snapshot and am having problems with my sound
card. For some unknown reason, mpg123 loops and plays the same sound
fragment yet the sound for programs like xboing and gaim do work but are
crackly. Could anyone suggest a fix?
