Note that section 6.0 - Upgrading from 2.7 to -current is
not up to date. Search through the archives for a first cut at
the full procedure.
In general, it seems that compiling a kernel from a new source tree
and not compiling userland results in *at least* problems with commands
like top or ps.
You're better off either:
A) sticking with 2.7-stable, recompiling the kernel, and the userland, or
B) following the instructions in section 1.2 and installing a recent
snapshot, then updating your source tree, and recompiling.
