2.7-stable is, well, stable for me. Didn't tried 2.8 yet but I don't
see why it should be less stable than 2.7.

IMHO, yes, you're wrong. I don't remember a lot of crash reports in
misc or tech about 2.7.
Myself, I never seen a crash on 2.7-stable. I have two 2.7 boxes on
two physically separated networks, routing, firewalling, nating and
running an ipsec tunnel between them for months now.
