strange console behavior

I'm having a weird problem with a console on one of my 2.7 boxes.  It
does it both from video and from the serial port.  It seems to throw away
approximately every other line of text.  For example, to log in, I have to
enter my username, press enter twice and then enter my password.  After the
shell comes up, I type some text but nothing appears.  I hit enter again,
and then I can type.  The behavior doesn't seem very consistent, but usually
the console just freezes after a while.  If I do a <ctrl>-<alt>-<f2> and 
switch to next console, it seems to work fine.  This never happens through 
ssh.  I have quite a few boxes with nearly the same configurations, and they 
never do this.

Any ideas?
