Then leave it off for debugging.
get a login on another machine.
Log into this as root and run XDM by hand.
If it goes nuts, just kill xdm from the other machine.
Look at the errors file (/var/log/xdm-errors).
Fix problems. Repeat.
This is basic debugging. Know the components and
what they need and you'll be a better admin.
