If the hotel rooms are indeed cancelled, then contact the hotel
directly and explain the situation, it is possible that will sell you
the rooms to you even cheaper than the original contract - hotel room
rates are always negotiable. I know that aircrews get the cheapest
rates, sometimes half the price you or I might pay for the same room -
but then they buy a lot of hotel rooms during a year. I suspect the
hotel would rather sell the rooms at a further discount than not sell
them at all.
I've had great luck in finding the lowest rates on hotel rooms by cold
calling and asking for the AARP rate. You can almost always negotiate
this rate if you are going to be staying for a long time or frequently
or getting multiple rooms.
Where is the hackathon going to be held? Maybe some locals can provide
services to help defray the costs of things like cars, rooms, food, etc.
