ok, I don't live in Switzerland, but still I can't seem to find these "scrap
piles".  Well, at work we don't have machines that old, or they don't have
modems, and at home I have only the already described cards ... I don't get out
much :-)

Well, I guess you're saying "why not just buy a real fax machine", and my wife
would probably approve!
