pureftpd on OpenBSD 3.6

Hi,

I'm having a problem with pureftpd on OpenBSD 3.6. I have posted to the pureftpd mailing list but unfortunately I have not received a response. I'm hoping that perhaps someone here is familiar with pureftpd on OpenBSD 3.6.

My problem is that I can only connect to pureftpd when I log in as root. When I attempt to use one of the other logins on the OpenBSD machine, I consistently get "530 Authentication Failed. Sorry" after providing the password for the user account.

I installed pureftpd from the OpenBSD packages list for OpenBSD 3.6 for i386 machines. I don't see a version number for pureftpd in the pureftpd banner when I run ftp.

I've read through the docs a number of times and don't see a specific switch to allow non root users. I'm running pureftpd from root at the command line with the command:

/usr/local/sbin/pure-ftpd -A -B -H -l unix

I am able to ftp in as root from the OpenBSD machine using ftp localhost and also from a Windows XP machine using ftp ipaddress. However, when I attempt to log in to a user account it fails with the 530 authentication error.

I imagine I'm doing something simple wrong here but I don't know what it is. An authentication failure sounds like the wrong password but that's not the problem.
The pureftpd banner has [privsep] [TLS] in the banner. My problem authentication seems to be before priviledge separation even occurs. And TLS is off by default and I assume it's present in the banner to indicate that it's compiled in.

I tried running the server with the --tls=0 option but I still cannot log in as a non root user.

I have not created an ftp user account on the OpenBSD box yet.

Can someone point out what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Ron
