On a related note, although mounting cd's to read
is fine from cd0a, to write them I must use cd0c.
I was certainly glad to find this out, so hopefully
posting it on the list will help someone eventually.

Specifically, cdrecord ... dev=/dev/cd0c:@ ...

Could these behaviours have something to do
with the "whole disk" (c) versus "first partition" (a)
disklabels?
