Initializing USB drive

Per the thread last week on backup devices, I now have an external 80GB USB drive to use for backup, but I can't finding anything in the man pages or archives about initializing except a note that the device would probably be sd0i. I'm assuming it would be less-than-optimal to initialize as FAT, so can anyone point me towards resources for initializing as standard BSD4.2?

dmesg below (GENERIC + RAIDFrame).

	Thanks!!
