Um. Give it a wiggle? Try another USB device to make sure that it gets
detected. Does the harddrive need to be turned on? Is there anything in
the BIOS concerning USB which might be tweakable? Does it get detected by
another machine? Or connected to a device which has a USB hub?

Nope, nothing HW related. I'm in the process of formatting it on a Windoze machine (detected just fine) to see if it detects better.
