XEmacs 20.4 port broken by bsd.port.mk

The XEmacs port doesn't compile any more. Configure mocks up on the new

CONFIGURE_ARGS+= --sysconfdir=${SYSCONFDIR}

XEmacs' configure stuff is quite old. How can I fix this? By removing
"GNU_CONFIGURE= yes" and running config by a pre_build target in the
Makefile?

Any ideas?
