This octave update now also fixes regression tests, thanks to some
suggestions by pval@ and sturm_(_at_)__(_dot_)_
On my sparc64 all tests pass, on my i386 one test does not pass. This is
related to PR 4578.

tgz attached (it's smaller than the diff).
