laptop does not see 3c589D card

I finally got my new laptop last week, but have not had any time to work
with it until now.  I installed with floppy and 2.3 CDROM.  The PC Card
3Com adaptor is not showing up, although it configured fine in W98.  It
seems to be in the generic supported hardware list on the CD (although
denizens of this list will remember that list is not accurate and
up-to-date).

What am I doing wrong?

And what does "not configured" mean?
