slow printing

I'm having trouble with my hp540.  when i give it a print job the page
will load into the printer and sit there for up to a minute delay and then
print.  This also happens when I echo a line into the lpt0, so it isn't
the spooling system.
I tested the printer on another OpenBSD machine and had the same
problem.  I also tested it with linux on both of the machines and it
printed immediately.
lpd doesn't report any errors.
Any ideas?
