3com 3056 pcmcia modem support?

  Before I recently found a file on the system called pcmciadevs which 
listed all the supported pcmcia cards, I just read the hardware file and 
it said that all pcmcia modems should work.  So I went out and bought 
this 3com 3056 pcmcia modem and at boot it says 'function 0 not 
configured' so I think that means it wont work.  I try ppp with 
/dev/cua00 and it just hangs.  Im kind of pissed because all these 3com 
cards are listed in pcmciadevs and some of them are ethernet/modem combo 
and I specifically avoided those cards and just got a modem card and it 
doesnt work.  Any idea of what I can do?
