plays what should be a 12 second 2-tone test in wav format in about
2.75-2.85 seconds. On my i386

 auich0 at pci0 dev 31 function 5 "Intel 82801CA/CAM AC97" rev 0x01: irq 11, ICH3 AC97

the 12 second 2-tone test takes pretty close to 12 seconds. Note that the
same driver (auich) is used on both. To further confuse the issue
mpg123 plays song36.mp3 just fine.

are you using /dev/sound or /dev/audio? and how do you play the sample?

if the sample is mono 8 bit, the default settings for /dev/audio should play it correctly, but if interpreted as 16 bit stereo for whatever reason, it'd play 4 times too fast, just as seen.
