From PackageThf@aol.comSat Feb 10 02:57:34 1996 Date: Sat, 13 Jan 1996 21:03:40 -0500 From: PackageThf@aol.com Subject: the freed seed (Superchunk Internationale (e)Mailing List) Hello Superchunk fans - here's the starter for the new year. I would have gotten this out a little sooner, but I've been having some problems with AOL - which I finally got fixed. (stupid AOL.) Anyway, here's some brief junk to start off..... ALSO, I was planning on reprinting the Merge Catalogue for all of you (the lastest edition with music from Merge and others PLUS t-shirts). Since it's kinda large - as a text file, that is (= mucho download time) - and I know some of you may already have it, here's the deal: I'll send it out to everyone UNLESS I get a note not to send it by Jan. 21. Okay? There was a brief profile/interview of Superchunk in Bone Magazine, which seems to be for the benefit of radio stations. It's in the December issue. No new info, but it does mention Wurster's band, 7 Brides For The Meatwagon, which spoofs buzz bin songs - they're currently planning a falsetto version of "You Oughta Know." And there's a color band pic. Also, there's a promo cd from "The Hits Postmodern Syndrome" (whatever that is) that has a comp. of new "alternative" music that includes "Yeah, It's Beautiful Here Too" - which leads me to believe it'll be the next single. ONWARD: ~~From jasongg@ix.netcom.com: i have a bootleg from a tour right before "on the mouth" came out. i got it from a guy a few years back on the internet. the concert's in Waltham, MA. the sound is terrible, but if you really like superchunk you'll fiddle with the equalizer/bass/treble/tone knobs and listen. there's some okay comments by Mac, um i'll have to dig around for it. i love superchunk and i fiddled with the knobs a couple of times so it was tolerable, but like i said it was pretty bad. but that's what bootlegs are all about.... ~~from psu08810@odin.cc.pdx.edu: This is in response to the question on "Swallow That" in your last posting. When I saw Superchunk in Portland in June '94, Mac introduced the song by saying (if I remember correctly) that it was about a friend/acquaintance with AIDS, and the prescribed medications. We all know that the band's between song banter is often deliberately misleading, so don't take my recollection of his interpretation on faith. Outside of that, I can't offer any insights. ++a response (of sorts) to that from kt0d061u@umiami.ir.miami.edu: With regard to the subject matter of "Swallow That": a couple of years ago, in an album review (in _Spin_, I think), the song was refered to as Mac's "AIDS anthem". After listening to the song frequently for the last 3 years, I still don't understand many of the lyrics, but those that I do understand don't seem to support the AIDS anthem theory. ~~from From: BabyDoll8@aol.com: in response to a couple pf things, first to woweezowee, iron was completed way before the album, they played it this spring in a hometown chapel hill show, they were also joking at the time that they were trying to name their album and at the time had deciced on, "don't blame me, i voted for superchunk" it rocked, also, superchunk began it's trend of opening with sunshine state at Raleigh lollapalooza in the summer, they also played animated airplanes at that show. also, will you people please stop refering to superchunk as "CHUNK" that is the worst insult you can give them, take five extra key strokes and get it right!! ~~from Indiette: just read in "popnauseum" mag that mac and jim met while mac was attending Columbia and jim was attending Fairfield...i always assumed that they went to UNC...also, chunk is going to europe from mid-jan to mid-feb, and should be touring the US again in late spring. ~~from shainin@worldweb.net, a story about the "Chapel Hill scene" from US News and World Magazine - pleeeze write me (at packagethf@aol.com) if you want a copy ~~from mrozek@msn.com: Mac's brother told me that Mac got the No Pocky for Kitty title from when Superchunk was on tour in Japan. Mac had a cat with him that became fond of this Japanese candy Mac liked alot called Pocky. Well eventually Mac realized that Pocky wasn't good for the cat so whenever Mac got some Pocky the cat wanted some and he wouldn't give him any and the cat got pissed; thus the title. When I've read these concert reviews I.ve been very surprised to here about mac surfing in the crowd. In the past I've known Mac to be very against any sort of moshing or crowd surfing. I remember reading a transcript of an interview some radio station did with Ian Mckaye of Fugazi. They were talkin about moshing and stage diving and cowd surfing and how they didn't really like it and during this interview Mac phoned into the station to voice his position. It was somewhere along the lines of how participating in these antics interfered with other people watching the show. This isn't the only place I heard about Mac's dislike for moshing, I've read other stuff in the past where he's said things along the same lines. It used to be that in Chapel Hill you could go see Superchunk and the crowd would be as calm as if they were watching some classical concert. But since then Superchunk's scope of audience has changed, and I suppose Mac has taken the "If you can't beat em, join em" philosophy. ~~from SebadohKid@aol.com: i just got the young rock compilation video of chapel hill bands. with superchunk are the likes of polvo, archers of loaf, small, southern culture on the skids, flat duo jets, pipe and many others. the precision auto video was superchunk's contribution. the video was obviously low budget but here is a description: it starts out going fast foward down franklin st. & other areas in chapel hill. then it switches off for a second to chunk playing. then mac opens a garage and brings out some old gold car and drives it (in fast foward again) through chapel hill. this series is repeated until mac closes the garage back.the polvo video of vibracobra was good as was the flat duo jet's radioactive man. most of young rock was devoted to small-time bands, and not too many any good. this letter finishes out with a thought from mmarti03@uoguelph.ca: Everyone should band together to raise the money for Mac to buy another shirt besides the Bats one he has right now. next issue - more opinions and info, followed by the Merge catalog. See ya then-
