From PackageThf@aol.com Fri Aug 1 22:45:02 1997 Date: Fri, 25 Apr 1997 04:18:21 -0400 (EDT) From: PackageThf@aol.com Subject: build your half of the bridge Back again for another exciting episode of the Superchunk eMailing List. If you're new to the list, welcome aboard, we'll be screening films on the promenade deck at noon.... (bad attempt at humour, I'll move on now...) It's a big issue, but it's been over 3 weeks, so I think I'm allowed. >>For starters, here's some very exciting information - Ladies and gentlemen, for your interactive pleasure, Superchunk itself is now on the web! Yes, YOU can now email Superchunk directly at superchunk@mindspring.com! (This really is the band and not someone pretending to be the band, I promise!) To make sure everything runs smoothly, here are just a few rules and miscellany for using the address: - please don't just write to ask them if they are coming to your home town or beg them to come to your home town. Tour scheduling is difficult enough as it is and they'll just feel bad if they can't come to your home town. So, please make it easy and don't ask. - it may take a few days, but you will get a reply to your letter. so please be patient and don't keep emailing until you get a reply - the band will get back to you as soon as they can! - please don't ask questions about ordering merchandise, as that is a question for Merge - merge@mrg2000.com - let them know and they'll be glad to help you out! >>The band finished up their week of recording and headed over to Virginia for a show at JMU (see below). The band is currently mixing the new album at Overdub Lane in Durham, NC. The album release date has been officially set for September 8, album title and song list when available. (And, for those of you who have asked, the line in "Hyper Enough" - now known as the "laughter guns" line - is actually: If it weren't for those lofty currents you're riding on, you would not exist.) >>Two nuggets from mrozek@ww-interlink.net: I was reading through this book of rock lists at the library and I found a little nugget of interest. According to the book, number 1 of "Postpunk's Greatest One-Shot Hits that Never Were Hits or One-Shots" is Slack Motherfucker. Rounding out the five are Unsatisfied (Replacements), Sex Bomb (Flipper), Expressway to Yr. Skull (Sonic Youth), and Never Really Been (Soul Asylum). The book actually has some pretty interesting and unusual information if you're a music buff, its called "The New Book of Rock Lists" by Dave Marsh. Also, I saw superchunk in Durham @ captured live studios, here's a breakdown: the first part. detroit has a skyline. marquee. watery hands. water wings. last sunday. driveway to driveway. precision auto. cast iron. silver leafy snowy stuff. green flowers blue fish. buzzkiller. her royal fisticuffs. throwing things. and two unnamed new songs. All the new songs were superb. I didn't initially like a lot of the "Here's where the strings come in" stuff when I heard it live before the album came out, but these new songs was really good, really, really good, at least I though so. Mac mentioned that Marquee had gotten some negative feedback from other people who had heard it, but I liked it. It was a more challenging pop song than most of their other stuff, but still good. No interesting banter, the band seemed kind of out of it, maybe it was because they weren't used to playing to a half empty club with no obnoxious audience members and no slam dancers (yeah). >>a Portastatic review (NYC show) from CMIBWA2: The last time i saw Porta (sept.) it was a 7 piece... this time around? mac + a guitar + a microphone! that's it! the set was: polaroid, your own cloud, spying on the spys, when you crashed, had, san andreas, taking you with me, a cunning latch, isn't that the way, hurricane warning, in the manner of ann frank, you know where to find me, naked pilsners... all only on an acoustic guitar! even the piano songs... damn it was cool. mac was in a bad mood, though, and was offended by the crowd's silence (we clapped when the songs were over, but not much else)... plus his guitar kept falling outta tune, and the monitors were all screwy, but fuck all of that...it was a great show! >>the JMU show review from bleyle@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu: ...i thought this show was much better than the last show at the black cat in d.c...it was my second time around with some of the new songs, maybe that's why. anyway, here is the list, i believe in order as i managed to snag jon's list from the stage. driveway to driveway, animated airplanes over germany, water wings, marquee, silverleaf and snowy tears, popular music, seed toss, unbelievable things, hyper enough, the question is how fast, felipe (this one i am confused about, mac referred to this as 'martinis on the roof' so i don't know if that's the real name or if they maybe changed up on the spot) closing with precision auto...encore: last sunday, on the mouth and - finally - throwing things...whew i am tired it was great, got super pictures and i am happy. notes: jim cut himself, someone from the crowd gave him a band-aid, mac said that was quite unsanitary. jim was talking up a storm, some classic bad jokes...something about a deal between him and jon where for every mistake jon makes jim has to make five, and for every five mistakes jim makes jon has to make none...no one laughed cause it made no sense. Jim said he was expecting the baba bah! from jon on the drums, so he proceeded to make jon do it, it was funny... (i should mention as well, that the illustrious Matt Pionfield was on hand for the d.c. show) For those of you on AOL, they did a review of Superchunk's DC show. If you want to check it out, follow this order: Critics' Choice, Music & Concerts, Current Reviews - and you'll find it. The reviewer really dug the show. Okay, that's all - more on the new Superchunk album next mailer, plus - scheduled - an interview with Jim about Humidifier. If you have any address changes, Q's for me, or Q's for the list, just drop me an email and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. Until next time... thanks to jon, matt, and ben at merge; plus congrats to spott on his promotion (PS - If you happen to be a Yo La Tengo fan - the new lp is great! - I have a list of tour dates, special thanks to Matt. If you'd like a copy, please email me and I'll send it on to you.)
