Substance is probably the best thing to get next, it focuses on earlier material than the Best Of and most of it is even better than Best Of. If you especially enjoyed Fine Time, Round and Round, Run and Vanishing Point on Best Of, you might want to get the album Technique, becasue that's where there from. If your favorites were Regret, World, and Ruined in a Day then seek out Republic, the album they're from. In the end though you'll probably find all the New Order albums are very much worthwhile. - Dan. _____________________________________________________________________ Sent by RocketMail. Substance is a collection of their early singles, many of which were not found on the albums, and is a must have! Disc 1 contains the "A" sides and Disc 2, mostly the "B" sides. My favourite album is LowLife (mostly due to sentimental reasons - it was my first). Of course, if you can get all the albums! They're all great. I think Substance 1987 (double disc) would be the next step up to get a wide taste of older material and b-sides. It's another compilation that sums up New Order very nicely. After that, you might want to tryed too. either "Technique" (which in my opinion, has the most melody of ANY New Order album to date), or the more laid-back but equally beautiful final album, "Republic." I don't knowwhich I like less! In any case, I think that New Order was, is, and always will be above any of the side project the members are doing nowadays. No matter how commercially successful they become. You can get record after record of great soundsing songs with Hooky's bassline, and you can get ballad after ballad with Barney at the vocals, and Stephen and Gillian can produce as many records or babies or whatever they feel like having... but nothing is ever going to compare to what those guys did together in the studio. Substance Abuse is a bootleg with a bunch of DJ remixes, ie. mixes only released to DJs. The soundquality of this bootleg is excellent and the entire CD is very good with high quality remixes. An average marketprice is around 25USD. Bilingual's main fault was that it wasn't quite as good as Very or Behavior, which were both five-star albums. And yeah, some of the singles were a bit odd, the b-sides were more experimental and a lot of the remixes were very poor. The "A Red Letter Day" singles had good mixes and great b-sides though. PSB and NO have quite a lot in common despite the obvious differences. They have tended to use the same producers and remixers in the same periods (Shep Pettibone, Arthur Baker, Stephen Hague...on up to Brothers in Rhythm and Farley and Heller), there's the concrete link of Electronic, both groups have consistently smart lyrics and excellent music... and there are the coincidences, like both having songs callled "Young Offender" on their '93 albums, and both releasing new versions of an old b-side as a-sides in 1995. By the way (this is my last bit of proselytizing, I promise) if you're interested in learning more about the PSB I recommend the 2-disc b-sides collection, Alternative. It's like Substance in that it spans a long period of their career and it features more eclectic material than the PSB's straightforward singles collection, Discography, which is also good. - Dan. _____________________________________________________________________ Sent by RocketMail. Haven't talked in a while and figured I poke my head out of lurking and contribute something. my two bits on Monaco- I like it although not all of it. the first 2 tracks, billy bones, happy jack, and the last track are the best. The rest sorta sound like Revenge, NewOrder, or Oasis knock-offs though you'll still catch me listening to the whole album sometimes. All in all, it looks like this album has gotten the same mixed reviews as RTP although I thought RTP was a little bit cheesier (Stop if you got love!). You know I'll be at the 9:30 club in D.C. to see Monaco next tuesday! (already got the tix!) anyone willing to transcribe or record and mp3 encode the upcoming show from toronto? I'd know a lot of people on the list would like to know what the hell went on. my New Order mp3 site will probably be back up at the beginning of september if anyone was wondering... wonder how many will whine if the new NO project sees the light of day on how shitty it is compared to (pick one): Old New Order material Monaco Electronic The Other Two etc... I for one will be happy that they even decided to release something new and 10 new mixes on 3 different overpriced import singles that I will have to special order :) well that's it! phi - ------- + To post to the list, send mail to . + Ceremony mailing list web page: http://www.monkey.org/~laps/ceremony/ + For help, see the web page, or email "help" to . + To talk to a person, send mail to . + Do _not_ send subscription/unsubscription requests to the list! ------------------------------ End of ceremony-digest V97 #54 ****************************** ------- + For information on subscribing/unsubscribing and the digest archives, + see the Ceremony web page: http://www.monkey.org/~laps/ceremony/ + Or, send e-mail to with the text + "info ceremony-digest" in the body of the message + A non-digest (direct mail) version of this list is also available. + To talk to a person, send mail to .
