Bernard has said Ian was planning on leaving the band because of his illness, so there would not have been much JD after Closer... but it is fun to speculate anyways. In my opinion... The music would have evolved about the same way... they were moving in unison, so the difference would have been the lyrics, for the most part. Some better songs perhaps, in having Ian's input, which was imperative in JD, though he did not write songs, he had a lot of ideas. The darkness (or whatever) of U.P. and Closer has nothing to do with the sound later. Good examples are Bauhaus, and even better And Also The Trees, where the lyrics are as romantic (especially with &ATT) yet the music did not remain so. People grow order and experiences change... no reason to think that Ian could have been different, in light of his sense of humor. So, I think that the fact that Closer froze a sound forever, it does not mean that they would have become yet another Christian Death or any of the many gothic bands of the last few years. One other factor that would have influenced the sound could have been Ian's vocal range and what songs would be good for him to sing, so perhaps there would be no World, but Regret and others would be easy to see. fernando PS In regards to the not getting it part... I think a lot of it could have been avoided if people actually comment on why they do not like a song. Listing songs invites a wider range of comments (or flames) than a couple of sentences presenting a point of view... e.g. 'Time Changes -- because of the unnecessary rap' - -*- ~*~ -*- "Blurred hurried bliss, and the smell of space, vanish through fires. I mentioned how i felt New Order had greatly influenced dance music. she replied with "Well I'm a dancer and I've never heard of them". Well, she was a proffesional dancer, but she danced to Paula Abdul and anything from that Jackson family. Well now, when Republic came out, this person, (as well as others like her) acted as if they had just discovered some new hot band. I find it very interesting that several well established bands as well as styles of music are overlooked. (at least in the U.S. anyway) When I first heard New Order in the early '80's, i hate to sound cheesey, but they had such a profound effect on me that i feel they are a main reason why i got into the music biz in the first place. Anyway, we all discover certain things at certain times. Some of us hate Republic and love Movement and vice versa. No matter what you like, i believe that in order to better understand something, no matter what the subject, you must look at the whole picture. It's all relevant. Each one of you have probably gone through several changes in the past years - yet every experience has made you who you are today. The same can hold true for any entity, such as New Order. Especially since they have had such a long history compared with many bands. Okay, i promise i won't write any more strange messages again- at least for awhile anyway. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I. and most of the members will agree, >didn't CHARGE at Mark for being tastless or "not getting it". But i just >want Mark to realise the significance of that album, Movement. Oops. Well most of the songs, Doubts Even here, Dreams Never End, etc.. are brilliant the mixing and production by Martin is dense and the vocals indistinct. The Peel Session versions show how good an album it could've been. But I think it is the worst album they have made right since UP all the way through to "Music For Pleasure". Now anybody know anything about the Other Two's "Innocence" 12". I only just got a copy and it's existence has been a total mystery to me.. It was written by Gillian and Stepehen. When Janet Street Porter met Barney she said "thanks for the theme tune" and he said "what do you mean?" so it's fair to asssume it's an Other Two track that was revamped. Apparently Peter couldn't hear his bass over Ians vocals in the shitty reherasal room so he tuned is amp up and created his 'sound'.
