I used to love the foreign gigs from about 85 onwards cos they were always bootlegged and you generally hadn't heard from anyone what they'd played. The tour with the Bunnymen in 87 was a particularly good one cos I remember getting, like, twenty tapes in one go, then sitting back and listening to 'em all, or sticking one on the Walkman on the way into college, enjoying the full gig. Christ, to have that much time on me hands - when did it all change? Course, there's no point in listening to the live stuff now - where's the 'surprises'?! Email me private and advise. I knew a plethora of worldwide tapers and traders from penpalling, even have met several in person. The guy who taped the Australia 1985/1987 tour has been in my bedroom at least two different visits. But I've never met the gentleman who taped the Southern California shows, we've just spoken on the phone ("he's on the phone") (the Australian has met both of us). The amusing thing though is that quite a few of New Order's gigs from the 80s were taped by non-fans, so you'd have random people with a SINGLE master tape of a New Order concert, but no other New Order. They'd just have happened to tape a New Order gig. It's weird to imagine how many people I found that way. I've supplied loads of gigs to some of the more famous New Order fans like Alex and Dave. Then again, I've sent copies of Pulp gigs to the official Pulp fanclub as well. The 1984 Berlin (April 8 1984) gig is essential, because Barney talks about how much he hates Berlin and how he's never going back... and he kept that promise for 17 years! A friend mentioned about at least one New Order show where the band played intentionally one song past the "tube" deadline, so that fans would have to leave and have missed the last tube by just 5 or so minutes. And yes, there are very few surprises these days, so we take the occasional surprises (performances of songs like Brutal, Digital, etc) and make them into masterpieces. I really am thrilled that Phil is playing guitar during "Blue Monday" - now that's sad, that I'm so excited over it. In a way, I'm sort of glad that the 2001/2002 shows are so dull, or I'd have tried to get all of them right away. I'm just not interested, because I know that there isn't anything special... give me the 1985 and 1987 australia tours any day - those are the best sounding shows, on a consistent basis. xox Mike In a message dated 1/5/03 2:49:14 PM, amjarvis@netcomuk.co.uk writes: << I know who you mean - initials DP. [history] new order's first release, and has 'in a lonely place' on the b-side, this was actually a joy division song though.. they later went on to re-record a different version of it (and released with a white/blue cover), however this version appears only on the vinyl release, and not on cd... [review] this version is somewhat similiar to the later version that appears on cd, and other albums.... however, it emphasizes the guitar and drums more.. i've also cleaned up some of the pops/clicks, and reduced the noise.. hope you enjoy it.. feel free to post your thoughts on it... The one place you can be guaranteed of getting the earlier version is the 7". That said, I also have the early version on the green one and the re-recorded version on the cream/blue. Originally, I had purchased the green one, but it actually had the cream/blue disc inside of it (with the re-recorded version). Anyway, I think one can also tell which one is which by the groovy notations, but I could be wrong. I have an autographed 7" with all 4 members, even though Gillian wasn't in the band yet. J.W. Bent - Dirty Mind (Prince) 2. LTJ Bukem - Music (Special Muzik Edit) 3. Squarepusher - Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division) 4. DJ Sneak - You Can't Hide From Your Bud 5. Senor Coconut - Showroom Dummies (Marcus Nikolai Remix) (Kraftwerk) 6. Soul II Soul featuring Shabba Ranks - Soul II Soul Special 7. Rae & Christian - Flashlight (Funkadelic) 8. Coldcut - Atomic Moog 2000 9. Open Door - Breathe (Pink Floyd) 10. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - White Lines 11. Space Cowboy - I Would Die 4 You (Prince) Pretty damn good versions - especially like the Bent cover of 'Dirty Mind' and Squarepusher's 'Love Will Tear You Apart' (complete with minimal vocals). The magazine also has a brief article mentioning New Order, although nothing special. l8rs, Nick ;-) ------------------------------ End of ceremony-digest V2003 #3 ******************************** ------- + For information on subscribing/unsubscribing and the digest archives, + see the Ceremony web page: http://www.monkey.org/~laps/ceremony/ + To talk to a person, send mail to .
