Were they put out on one compilation CD or > individually? Razormaid is a remix service for DJs. They remix tracks and release them on compilations, which are avilable on vinyl and on CD. (So the various New Order remixes are scattered over various records and CDs.) Occasionally their remixes are released commercially. > What is the general sound of them? I have never heard them, but > noticed them on the discog and also as some of them being included > on the proposed CD project. Here's a quick rundown of the Razormaid New Order mixes: Blue Monday: basicly a medley of Blue Monday and The Beach. Nothing terribly new, but the arrangement is kind of nice. 5-8-6: Not too different from the original, but it's nice and long. Touched by the Hand of God: A longer mix with more thump thump and fewer ambient parts than the original. Bizarre Love Triangle: their remix isn't drastically different from the original, but the eq of the percussion and bass and the overall mix have amuch fuller sound than the original remixes. And they added a very effective break. 1st Subculture mix (1985): sort of similar to the Lowlife version, but with new synth breakdowns and soem interesting effects. Unfortunately this mix was only released on vinyl, and the vinyl was mastered with bass that's way too heavy, and it sounds utterly wretched. 2nd Subculture mix (1986): for this mix they brought in Debora Iyall of Romeo Void to do some additional vocals, which ended up being pretty interesting. (She changes "you realize you can't shaft without someone else" to "you realize you can't f*ck without someone else") Unfortunately this mix was never released on CD either, but the vinyl version sounds fine. 3rd Subculture mix (1990): a completely new mix that sounds absolutely nothing like the Lowlife mix or the Substance mix. A sparse mix made up of a bass line, a synth line, minimal percussion, and Bernard's vocals. ============================ even if you've never liked the official subculture mixes, the first 2 aren't bad.. but the third mix single-handedly resurrects the song back to the stature that it should have...it's how (in my eyes) i've always envisioned the new order mix to be... DEFINITELY and HIGHLY recommended.. i'll be posting information about these privately... later || | | || | || | ne ga tiv e 1 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Feb 2003 14:30:35 -0500 From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: (Fac33) Feb 2003 record collector Review of 511 in the current Record Collector issue - a bit behind, although they are also behind in the reviews for Retro and the Pulp Hits DVD/CD. xox mike ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Feb 2003 12:22:28 -0800 (PST) From: Mark Dignam Subject: (Fac33) 24PP HMV Special Cover Hello All, as of 17:05 GMT today, there were 3 copies of the 24 Hour Party People with the Saville cover DVD on the shelf of HMV at Blue Water Shopping Mall in Kent, England. The Razormaid vinyl (or In Hindsight CD) has much better sound-quality than the RM single. > oddly enough, my US promo 12" info isn't > in the discography (i think) it only > has 2 tracks, instead of 3, but has > the same catalog number: > > 12": US 1986 (A&M SP 12174) [promo] 7502-12174-0 > A) 9:41 Shellshock (extended version) > B) 7:35 Shellshock (dub version) Argh. The Shellshock 12" is one of those releases that exists in thousands (at least :) different tracklistings - and all of the have the same cat#, SP12174... It drives me crazy. I mean I think that most everyone would agree that the videos for Perfect Kiss and True Faith are New Order's most significant contributions to the medium (along w/ BLT perhaps), and lo and behold a record label actually chose those two to put on a DVD! Sure, we all think highly of TBTHOG and WiM since we get to see our normally taciturn heroes goofing off and personally Ruined in a Day is one of my favorites and I don't even really like that song. For those of you unfamiliar w/ Rhino, they generally confine themselves to rereleases, and are truly comitted to putting out a quality product. Of course in the case of the New Order, Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen box sets thay are nothing more than Stateside distributors, but they've been responsible for a number of great compilations over the years. The expanded Nuggets and Nuggets part II, and a soul set "Beg Scream and Shout" that is flat out obscene for the sheer number of quality tracks it contains. And because most of their releases are of the archival type, then I personally know that I must be getting old a shit since stuff I bought the day it came out is being packaged and released in the manner of a Sun Records anthology. Anyway, for all that praise it's curious and disappointing that they chose to use an editted version of substandard quality for the Perfect Kiss video. I bought a DVD version of the (best of ) New Order off ebay a few months back which is right off the Japanese laser disc and it looks 10 times better. WQhat is very cool though is that the Glastonbury '87 footage interspersed with the oompah-loompahs on steroids in the True Faith video has been greatly expanded. You actually see all of hooky instead of just his leather-clad leg. Also, Barney's throwing around his guitar into equipment stacks in what surely must've been the denouement of Sister Ray. I guess the whole show must be on film somewhere. Now that would truly be a great release IMOnot necessarily because of the performance itself, but because it looks like its actually on film as opposed to video. As for the live version of Blue Monday from 5 11, they look tired and old.
