The most brilliant thing about Gillian, unlike most other "woman in rock", is that she makes absolutely no attempt to conform to the unspoken expectations of dress or demeanor. She shows up in her mother's dresses and just plays her parts, except when she's only pretending to play them and chatting with somebody off-stage, which if you think about it, is dead cool. Absolutely no artifice to her. Usually a band does an instrumental mid-set to give the vocalist a break, or opening song to get the show started. Not New Order - they start with a Brotherhood "album track" and THEN jump to the instrumental. Then *another* Brotherhood "album track" before the familiar Ceremony/Temptation. Can you imagine your average fan at this concert - in Perth, as well - who didn't yet have Brotherhood? Plus I've always loved how the band omitted their superhits of Blue Monday and BLT. I realize that they've flooded other shows with these songs during that tour. The Byron Bay soundcheck is *really* awesome. I can't wait to get it sorted for itunes so that I can spread the wealth. It's going to take awhile, but it'll be worth it. That may be the best show, especially since only ONE person taped it - a British guy on a visa! It used to be one of the toughest shows to get from tape traders, because everyone assumed that you had to get it from the Australian-based tapers. The other tough Australian gig to get was 12-14-82 Perth, because it was taped by a college student as a favor and she did just one trade of it, then probably went on with her life. I do have a copy of this on tape (so my collection must be pretty good, eh?) but no trace of the soundcheck, though the gig tape was in the case labelled as if it were the soundcheck. http://www.new-order.net/no/gigs/nogigs.html/NO-870209 > The other tough Australian gig to get was 12-14-82 Perth, because it was > taped by a college student as a favor and she did just one trade of it, then > probably went on with her life. I get the impression that it's about as male-dominated in the same way that mathematics is, no real difference of aptitude between the genders, but since tapers appear to be a tight-knit bunch, anything really different might be a touch difficult to accept. I'm probably wildly speculating here, though. That I also have this on tape is somewhat amazing, then. I would imagine that my copy is about 3rd - 4th generation, although it's been a while since I've listened to it. http://www.new-order.net/no/gigs/nogigs.html/NO-821214 has some pretty interesting notes sent in by somebody who had attended that gig, which apparently wasn't their best. People in the audience were even claiming that the bass was taped(!). Although the version of Blue Monday (only the fourth time they had played it sounded surprisingly mature, so there's nuggets of accomplishment even in some of their more ropey performances. - --Sam - --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Of course, there are limits to diversity, earth is a single point of failure for the foreseeable future." -- Sean Donelan - --------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 03:04:51 EDT From: Cynflux@aol.com Subject: Re: (Fac33) someone like you single hello. this link may help you. http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/singles/sly.html according to the New Order Discography site, 'Someone Like You' was apparetly limited to 12" vinyl. Super fast! just out of curiosity, did you order via fax or e-mail? I e-mailed my order last week (Friday?) and did not receive any sort of confirmation. Not that I'm worried, but I'd just like to know if they got my order. Also, Thanks for the discs. I figure they would only get in touch with me if there was a problem with the order (credit card screw up or something). Figure I'd give it 2-3 weeks and then inquire if it has not arrived. I'm actually listening to the CD now thanks to the kind person who posted a copy to the web. I got no confirmation before I received the CD in the post, after about a week. (I live in Norway) No need for worrying then.
