I traveled from the US to London for New Year's 98 to see them at the Ally Palace in fear that they would never play again. Then I saw NO twice more in 2001. I'll probably not bother seeing them again, but y'never know... Is there a count for the number of Ally Pally tapers? Besides Alex and me, I'm guessing Dave Jones also taped (I forgot to ask him when I met him last year). Who else? By far one of the worst-sounding venues, so it's not like it's worth getting this gig, but I'm just wondering 'cause security door check was a tad difficult. x Mike In a message dated 7/12/03 1:54:18 PM, herskowi@yahoo.com writes: << I honestly believe that most of the items in that Joy Division collection are priceless, but we have to remember that the most valuable thing right now is seeing New Order live. Am starting a new feature called "Barney says..." where I listen to stuff I write up and put up some of the more interesting of Sumner's musings at the following URL: http://www.new-order.net/no/audio/lv/BarneySays/ The first writeup featuring this new and improved feature is 851203 Hacienda Manchster (first performance). See: http://www.new-order.net/no/gigs/nogigs.html#NO-851203 I don't think I totally nailed the exact wording down, so if you have any corrections, please let me know! I'll be doing this regularly from now on. Don't worry, Hooky will have his own section when the time comes. As far as I know, only twice in NO history did the group play more than one set a night, and these were both at The Hacienda (26 JUN 82 and 03 DEC 85) The 1982 set comprises mostly the same songs, with Procession being unique to the first perofrmance, and The Village, We All Stand, and Senses unique to the second. Ceremony was _not_ performed, but it was soundchecked before the first gig. Interesting. However, by 1985, things are very different. The first song (As It Is When It Was) is the only one both perfomances have in common... I wonder how many folk were lucky enough to stay for both shows? Oh, almost forgot to mention: Put a couple more videos up at http://www.new-order.net/av/ Electronic's GAWI (nothing none of you haven't already seen) and MTV 120 Minutes 'Madchester' profile, which has some amusing anecdotes from folks we all know and love (or love to hate). Gonna remove the Revenge vids in a couple days, grab 'em while you still can. - --Sam ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jul 2003 02:14:50 -0700 From: Sam Habash Subject: (Fac33) Hook Line... Sooner than I thought, because as it turns out, the late gig at the Hac was Hooky's turn at the mic. The part that cracked me up was: 2+2=5 contains the line "Go and tell the king that the sky is falling in". It's from Yorke and his brother Andrew's favorite bedtime story, Chicken Licken. In it, an acorn falls on a bird's head, making it think the sky is coming down and inspiring it to tell the king. En route, the bird attracts a following of concerned poultry. Eventually, a fox says he will show the birds where the king is. He leads them into his den where he and the fox family rip their gizzards out. The end.
