Strangely, I don't seem to recall ever reading anyone debating this issue. And, I've been on the list for, gosh, pushing 7 or 8 years now, I think. Then again, I do tend to be pretty forgetful. And I believe only 4 questions at the other lecture too? From memory, he was roughly asked - 1. Why his work was so 'iconic' (and there was a sub question about his typography). 2. A Canadien fan said something about his artwork adding to the whole New Order 'cult' thing in Canada and quoted the 'how cool is coldness' reference to Technique. Er, can't remember the question though - perhaps something about him being happy to be regarded as a cult? 3. Some bloke who ran his own business and was sick and tired of art directors and suchlike wanted to know if Saville thought he should just go down his local art college and offer some work to an art student, see what they come up with for him. 4. What's he doing now? (Answer to this one is that he couldn't actually tell us - very hush hush). Interesting bits of info were that Curtis was very much a 'leader' in JD so would utlitmately pass comment on Saville's work whereas New Order were much more democratic with no leader and Hooky would say something should be red, whereas Barney said it should be blue, so ultimately they were difficult to work with. He also said they'd ask for a record sleeve, without even knowing what a track or album was going to be called so giving him nothing to go on whatsoever. What's he doing now? (Answer to this one is that he couldn't actually tell us - very hush hush). Funny enough he told us that his phone hadn't rung for 6 months now. He's had no offers at all. Felt a bit sorry for him - I'm busy as f**k, ha! ha! - I'll throw him some of mine... He said that he was sick of advertising agencies and corporations using the latest designers to make them look cool for a season before dumping them - and how he was sick of so many designers obliging - 'but I suppose they've got to pay the bills...' > Interesting bits of info were that Curtis was very much a 'leader' in JD so would utlitmately pass comment on Saville's work whereas New Order were much more democratic with no leader and Hooky would say something should be red, whereas Barney said it should be blue, so ultimately they were difficult to work with. He also sounded terribly disappointed that New Order suddenly wanted to know where all their money had gone when Factory collapsed as he'd always assumed they didn't care about the money side. Also, he'd mentioned about sitting in his car in the rain one night and feeling really empty (about 'design') and how he was beginning to understand and empathise with Yves Klein's 'Blue' work, when a leaf floated onto the windscreen, True Faith... I think he said something about Gretton walking into the studio one day looking for a cover without any names, songs, suggestions or anything and saying 'just design it, you c**t'. We got the story about Curtis being 'the one you had to impress' while he implied that NO's 'democracy' was more about disagreement for the hell of it... Maybe I'm reading in - but I thought he got a little emotional when he spoke about Ian (am I imagining this?) He said he knew it was terrible but his first thought when Wilson told him that Ian was dead was 'F**k - we've got a grave on the cover!' Have to say, I found the answers regarding his work with Yamamoto to be very interesting. Apparently he received £1,000 for his first brochure and then £100 for each full page advertisement... He reckoned that in fashion work the models get more than the designer and the photographer about 20 times as much, even now and advised anyone to take control as an Art Director, as it was the only way to make real money, and then I think he said something about design being dead. If I remember anything else of vague interest, I'll post it... AtB Mark Dignam ramsesblue@yahoo.com P.S. - I just remembered - He was signing 'his work' downstairs afterwards, I said I had planned on dragging loads of records and things from Ireland for him to sign but that I decided I didn't want him writing all over his beautiful covers and he said 'yeah, it's kind of f**king them up with that silver ink' referring to the guy who got 'everything' signed just before me, ha! ha! > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "P SAVILLE" > To: > Sent: Saturday, September 20, 2003 12:31 AM > > > > Hello list, > > > > Is anyone who was able to attend Peter Saville's > lecture earlier this > month > > willing to give their review, thoughts, synopsis, > recollections of the > > event? > > > > I'm sure there are a lot of us interested to know > about it on the list. > > > > thanks > > > > N. > > > > > _________________________________________________________________ > > Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Seabound! Excellent choice... I've come to understand that bliss Is quite impossible and if I'll ever find a way I'll claim another life That's "Hooked", the best track on their album, "No Sleep Demon." There is a remix that was somewhat popular in industrial clubs in the US, but I think the album version is much better. AND this is somewhat New Order related. Seabound did an excellent (if not a big long) cover of Confusion. Look for that...
