Anyway, regarding Kevin's post about State Of The Nation, this was probably my least favorite the songs on Substance. Nondescript, as he said. However I gained more appreciation after hearing a live version of it. I think it has to do with Hooky's bass. And, by the way, I do like Such A Good Thing and Run Wild! Of course, there's probably many, many omissions, as lots do not have writing credits listed, and in some cases, falsely credited ones, for example, Funkadelic's Atmosphere, credited to Curtis/H/M/S, (release date Apr. 1975). Thanks to Mike (I believe that's his name, if not I totally apologize), the NO gig taper extraordinaire, I have the Bay Area Area One show currently in my CD rotation. I was at that show, but couldn't understand most of the comments. From the CD, however, Barney's comments are, on a whole, quite funny. The "It's great to be back in the States!" that he shouts out near the beginning and the end is pretty lame. The hilarious comment though is his very last one where he shouts, "KEEP ON TRUCKIN!" Just thinking of him using a saying that I haven't heard since the 70's with his British accent cracks me up. Anyone else have any other NO "funniest" moments? Well, it depends on the definition of rare... The Canadian version is rare because it is the only place where you'll find the Subuteo Dub on CD. The promo is rare because of it's unique sleeve and the scarcity of it. I have not seen the promo for sale before (that I can remember). Which one do you consider rarer? The UK CS of RIAD w/ the NO mix of VC, or the UK promo CD5 of RIAD with the K-Klass edit? What I'm getting at is that rarity is subjectively decided considering tracks, sleeve, condition, and scarcity. Wasn't WiM (one of) the first CD5 promo from Factory? Hands up if you are the person who ran around Portsmouth Guildhall with somebody's underpants on your head during the soundcheck because the roadie said he'd get you the bands' autographs if you did... >> ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2003 10:59:57 EDT From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: Re: (Fac33) NO's "funniest" moments, new shows, and gym Q Yeah the Keep on Trucking was hilarious - totally unexpected. I think that was a first. Actually I've only taped New Order 3 times (Ally Pally '98/'99, Shoreline 7-31-01, and Vancouver 8-2-01), and only seen them 4 times (those 3 plus the Shoreline '93). There are loads other people who taped New Order dozens of times; they're essential because they did the '80s recordings, which are the best New Order shows period. I just try to help with distribution. I have some new available shows on my itunes to offer; all are one or two tracks long, depending on a cassette flip or other editing: 8-5-93 Great Woods (last US show of the '93 tour - from DAT master) 2-5-85 Glasgow Barrowlands (by far one of my favorite shows, because you get the whole crowd singing along with New Order's lyrics & music - best example during the keyboard intro for "Thieves Like Us" - and this is from Malcolm, not Dave! Most people may remember that Malcolm retired from taping in the early 90s and disposed of the majority of his cassette masters. Like Dave, he used the D6 and pro mics (Sony ECM909LT), but he wasn't as widely distributed as Dave) 9-12-86 Glasgow Barrowlands (again from Malcolm) 8-12-85 New Orleans (taped by Reed - another infamous 80s Southern taper; done with the D6 probably because it's too hard to sneak in the D5) 6-19-83 Austin (taped by Reed using his D5 & what I believe are 990 mics) Anyway same rules as before. Some people who have participated in the past are welcome (like my favorite Cleveland lawyer), but those who participated and then complained aren't welcome (don't even try to write to me) :-) x Mike ps - for those of you who do a gym or exercise workout with a CDdiscman/etc., which New Order songs can you recommend for a treadmill running session? If you're already doing a treadmill with New Order, please let me know the songs you use. Is it even possible to treadmill with only New Order music? Thanks! I wouldn't have agreed with Eddie on this one until quite recently. Funny enough, Peter Saville made a couple of comments at his talk about how wanted to impress Ian because he was the leader and how NO were a genuine democracy. I think Barney, Hooky and Steven certainly made up the unique sound of JD (along with Martin Hannett of course) and wrote the music but Ian was the focus. everything revolved round him, his lyrics, his vocals, even his illness. Simple test is this - JD couldn't and didn't survive without Ian. NO can and will (however crap) survive Gillian's retirement. NO would never have existed if Ian lived. No Temptation, no EGG, no Sunrise, no Technique. No point in discussing this - he knew he only wanted to make two albums anyway. One last thing - everyone in JD (and associates) was taken by surprise by Ian's suicide (despite previous incidents), yet when you look back, it all seems inevitable, lyrically, musically, visually. Planned. Ian's band always and forever. AtB Mark ramsesblue@yahoo.com P.S. Imagine Ian doing Fine Time - "Hey! Hey! Sophisticated Lady - you know, I've met a lot of cool chicks..." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo!
