Due to injury and fatigue, Pipe and Butterglory (respectively) have had to leave the show. But don't fear! Replacing them will be the Magnetic Fields and Spent. So it's not all bad! Other Merge/Merge-related bands playing CMJ include: Verbena (Sept. 5 - Irving Plaza - 9:15pm), Future Bible Heroes (Sept. 5 - Tramps - 10:15pm), Portastatic (Sept. 5 - Thread Waxing Space - 7pm, followed by Mac's pals Mark Eitzel and Rebecca Gates), Humidifier (Sept. 5 - Acme Underground - time TBA) For those of you who want to chat about Chunk or whatever else you like, I will be at CMJ - at Superchunk and some of the other shows I just listed. I usually don't coordinate my wardrobe in advance, but at the Superchunk show, I'll be wearing a hideously bright orange/yellow Yo La Tengo shirt with the Buddy Miles picture from the "I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One" cd. (Plus the fact that I'm 6'4" - you can't miss me.) So don't be shy, say hi if you like... >>European Medicine European denziens! Don't despair - the Chunk will most likely be coming to see you, too. Tenative plans are being scheduled for a 2 1/2-week tour sometime in December. More info to follow as plans are finalized. >>What's Up Matador? OUT NOW: The new "What's Up Matador?" comp - it's a 2-disc set (for the price of one!) celebrating "favourite tracks" on disc one of matador artists past & present while disc 2 are unreleased/rare tracks from current matador artists. Disc one features Superchunk's "For Tension," which shares disc space with yo la tengo's "tom courtenay," the pizzicato five's "twiggy twiggy," liz phair's "stratford-on-guy," among others. (!) Disc two includes rarities from Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Guided By Voices, Helium, and others. >>In Brief: - Check out the latest issue of "Maximum Guitar" (formerly Guitar School) - there's already a review of the new Chunk album in it! (The issue should be out mid-September) - Ooops... From the Jon Wurster Interview of weeks past, a musician was mentioned (Artie Shep), but it seems the artist's name is really Archie Shepp. My fault. - Tokyo-based artist Takako Minekawa will have a forthcoming remix ep (Roomic Cube) coming out soon on March Records. Included will be a remix by Portastatic, as well as remixes by Trans Am, Sukia, and the Pulsars, among others. I'll let you know when it comes out. -Yo La Tengo fans: The video for "Sugarcube" will be on MTV's 120 Minutes show tomorrow night (8/31). (Directed by Phil Morrison, who has also done some Superchunk videos, including "Driveway To Driveway") THIS ISSUE: Thanks to Todd, Jefre, & Skippy for contributions and corrections. Extra thanks to Jon W. and Ben G. If you wrote me and I either didn't write back or I didn't put your info in the mailer, it was accidental, so write me and let me know. Also, if you have questions, comments, or address changes, drop me a line at packagethf@aol.com.
